About the Book While writing the first drafts of her best-selling Grading the Teacher (Penguin Books Canada), Nellie Jacobs knew there was no book like it on the market. To clarify its focus, her editor asked her to identify its intended audience. Was it meant for parents or for teachers? Objectives All along, the author replied, her three primary objectives were to: ♦ Describe the general workings of educational systems ♦ Offer insights into possible issues and problems, and ♦ Ultimately arm parents with practical tools to effect change when necessary. Nellie's underlying parallel goal, however, was that it serve as a benchmark for educators to evaluate the quality of their own teaching. In other words, teachers could use its information to become even better - if possible - at what they do for a living.
Results Published in the fall of 1996, Grading the Teacher became a bestseller. It was featured by regional and national media. The book was added to resource centres at educational institutions (from elementary schools to faculties of education) and public libraries across Canada. Copies eventually found their way into the hands of thousands of parents and teachers worldwide.
Appreciative parents from around the world wrote Nellie about their thoughts and personal experiences. Best of all, school guidance counsellors were recommending the book to parents and teachers. The icing on the cake was to discover that it was being used by teaching staffs from Canada to Australia to improve their individual teaching. Availablity Grading the Teacher is available for sale on this site and for loan from community and school libraries around the world.
Speaking Engagements Nellie would be delighted to speak on these and other topics in the coming year to your parent or teacher association.
